Ham radio is a device with a designated frequency that helps individuals communicate whenever required. Also known as amateur radio, most operators use this device for exchange of messages in non commercial operation. Although ham radio operators use different transmission modes to communicate, the commonly used modes for voice transmission are (SSB) Single Sideband and (FM) Frequency Modulation. Single sideband is preferred when bandwidth on long distances is restricted whereas frequency modulation is preferred due to clarity and quality of audio signals in short distances. Although digital computer based modes and techniques are being used in military applications and commercial requirements, several amateur ham radio operators yet prefer using the reliable Morse code signal (Continuous Wave-CW). It is essential that an individual passes a licensing exam test before operation a ham radio.

Amateur radio operators are often granted special operating privileges depending on their knowledge and experience. Amateur radio licensing in many countries is a simple process that requires individuals to display their level of technical knowledge. In the United States there are different levels for licensing exams. In most countries individuals have to attend a training course before they appear for a written examination to obtain a beginners license for ham radio operation. A license issued in a country is only valid in that country, unless special permission is granted in a reciprocal licensing agreement to use the issuing license in another country. Privileges and grants on licenses for ham radio operators vary in accordance with an individual's knowledge on operations, and country. In some countries ham radio operators may be required to have additional station licenses in addition to their ham radio license. The issuing of licenses and examinations held vary in accordance with countries.

Examinations in most countries are held once or twice a year in the national capital of a country. Some governments in developing countries make it mandatory to pay annual fees for ham radio operators. Individuals can have their ham radio licenses revoked if individuals fail to pay their annual fees. In United States and most European countries, individuals can get an opportunity to avail of a ham radio operator's license easily because of the frequency of examinations in different cities of every country.
